Disaster Preparedness for Hospitals and Healthcare Organizations Within the Community Infrastructure

This training is provided by the Texas Engineering Extension Service. Disaster Preparedness for Hospitals and Healthcare Organizations within the Community Infrastructure brings together those individuals from the hospital and healthcare community who are responsible for ensuring the resiliency of healthcare services during a high consequence or catastrophic event within a jurisdiction. The training uses classroom learning, video presentations, and table-top exercises to train participants on how to respond, recover and manage an incident. Through a focus on preparedness processes and activities, this course provides an opportunity for participants to acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to help them ensure the sustainability of their facilities and organizations during all types of disasters. This course is designed to provide training to the target audience to assist them in preparing for, responding to and recovering from a WMD/CBRNE terrorism incident and other non terrorism hazards which impacts their facilities, systems and employees while providing care for the incident victims. Target Audience: Healthcare facility managers, operators, supervisors and employees; Emergency management personnel, EMS personnel, fire departments, law enforcement, public health.

The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center (EMRTC) and The Texas A&M University System’s Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX)/National Emergency Response and Rescue Training Center (NERRTC) have developed this course to addresses medical preparedness for and response to blast effects through a combination of lectures, small group activities and tabletop participant exercises. Participants completing this course will gain an enhanced understanding and awareness of issues and considerations relating to a bombing incident. Content areas include identification of targets, explosives characteristics, pre-attack indicators, pre- and post-detonation response, bombing injuries, security, and resource management. The course development team identified the primary audience for this course as first receivers and first responders. This group consists of nurses, physicians, emergency room personnel, trauma surgeons, pulmonologists, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel, and emergency managers.
